Effective conductors are artistic communicators who empower their singers, players, and collaborative partners. Expressive conducting is non-verbal communication at its best – utilizing meaningful, tension-free movements fueled by the musical score and the conductor’s imagination.  Optimizing your conducting gesture technically begins with accurate organization of the whole arm.  Using the principles of Body Mapping, this is a practical, movement-oriented somatic session that teaches conductors at all levels how to accurately map the arm structure to maximize movement capacity and minimize tension and injury.

Class topics:

  • Mapping and organizing the whole arm
  • The four arm joints
  • Mapping the hands (all 19 joints)
  • Releasing the wrist
  • The three arm rotations
  • Humeroscapular rhythm
  • Support for arm movement from a dynamic core
  • Challenges of young singers during the mutation, along with common pittfalls
  • Rudimentary strategies for helping to prevent vocal injury
